How Can You Easily Fix the “Restricted Setting” Error on Android?

Why Does Android Block Accessibility Settings and How Can You Enable Them Safely?

Android’s “Restricted setting. For your security, this setting is currently unavailable” message appears when trying to grant accessibility permissions to apps installed from sources outside the Google Play Store. This security feature, introduced in Android 13 and later versions, is designed to protect users from potentially harmful apps that request sensitive permissions.

Why This Error Occurs

Android blocks third-party apps (especially those sideloaded via APK files) from accessing accessibility settings by default. This measure helps prevent malicious apps from gaining access to personal data or controlling device functions without user consent. The restriction is triggered when an app requests permissions like drawing over other apps, notification access, or accessibility services, and the app was not installed through an official app store.

How to Allow Restricted Settings for Trusted Apps

If you trust the app and need to enable its accessibility settings, follow these steps:

  1. Open the app and attempt the action that triggers the “Restricted setting” error.
  2. Close the app after the error message appears.
  3. Go to your device’s Settings and select Apps.
  4. Find and select the app that was blocked.
    • On Samsung devices, you can long-press the app icon and tap the “App info (i)” option.
  5. On the app info page, tap the three-dot menu (top-right corner).
  6. Select Allow restricted settings.
  7. Authenticate using your device’s security method (PIN, fingerprint, or face unlock).
  8. A confirmation message will appear stating that restricted settings are now allowed for the app.
  9. Return to the app and re-enable the required accessibility permission. The app should no longer be grayed out or disabled.

Note: If the three-dot menu is missing, revisit Settings > Accessibility > Installed Apps, tap the problematic app, and trigger the error again. This often makes the menu appear on the app info page.

Additional Tips

  • Some devices list Accessibility under Settings > Additional Settings.
  • Only enable restricted settings for apps you trust, as this bypasses important security protections.

Android’s restricted setting feature protects users from unauthorized access to sensitive permissions. For legitimate apps, you can manually override this restriction through your device settings, ensuring both security and functionality. This approach ensures your device remains secure while allowing necessary app functions, providing peace of mind and a smooth user experience.
