Imagine your computer is a vault. Controlled Folder Access is the lock, and the Protected Folders list decides what’s inside. Adding or removing folders from this list is like deciding what valuables go in your safe. Let’s break it down.
Protected Folders are the ones guarded by Controlled Folder Access to prevent unauthorized changes. By default, Windows protects key folders like Documents, Pictures, and Videos. But you can add more folders if needed—or remove ones you’ve added manually.
Table of Contents
How to Add a Folder to the Protected List
- Press the Start button, type Windows Security, and hit Enter.
- Click on Virus & Threat Protection.
- On the right, select Manage Ransomware Protection.
- Select Protected Folders. If prompted by UAC (User Account Control), click Yes.
- Click Add a Protected Folder.
- Navigate to the folder’s location, select it, and click Select Folder.
Now, any app trying to modify that folder will be blocked unless it’s trusted.
How to Remove a Folder from the Protected List
- Press the Start button, type Windows Security, and hit Enter.
- Click on Virus & Threat Protection.
- On the right, select Manage Ransomware Protection.
- Select Protected Folders. If prompted by UAC (User Account Control), click Yes.

Note: You can’t remove default Windows folders like Documents or Pictures—only those you’ve added manually.
Think of ransomware as a burglar trying to mess with your files. Controlled Folder Access stops it cold. Adding extra folders ensures your most important data stays safe, while removing unnecessary ones avoids interruptions with trusted apps.
Tips for Managing Protected Folders
- Add folders where you store critical files outside default locations (like custom directories).
- Regularly review your list to keep it clean and relevant.
- Avoid adding network paths or shared drives—they might not work reliably.
This feature is a shield for your data. Use it wisely by protecting what matters most and keeping your system organized. A little effort now can save you from big headaches later!
