How to Fix Oculus Rift Error “Can’t Reach Oculus Runtime Service”?

Problem

“Can’t reach Oculus Runtime Service” error message indicates that Oculus Rift application unable to access and communicate with Oculus’s core service which usually happens when:

  1. Settings misconfiguration.
  2. Conflicting with other settings.
  3. Software Update running in the background prevents Oculus from reaching the Runtime Service.

Perform following step to fix Oculus Rift error “Can’t Reach Oculus Runtime Service”.

Solution 1: Install Oculus Patch

  1. Navigate to Oculus official website and download the latest released patch.
  2. Right-click Oculus Patch and select Run as administrator.
  3. Click on Repair option.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. If the repair isn’t working, uninstall the existing software and download the entire software package again from official website.

Solution 2: Change Date and Time

  1. Press Windows + S, type settings in the dialogue box and open the application.
  2. Click on Time and Language.
  3. Uncheck Set time automatically and Set time-zone automatically.
  4. Now click on Change underneath Change date and time and set the time to a previous date.
  5. Click on Change and restart your computer.
  6. Plug in Oculus and try launching its software and check if the problem is solved.
  7. If the time change isn’t working, revert the changes and set the correct time.

Solution 3: Launch Oculus application from the directory

  1. Press Windows + E to launch File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\OVRServer_x64.exe
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.

Solution 4: Restart Oculus VR Runtime Service

  1. Press Windows + S, type services.msc in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  2. Search for Oculus VR Runtime Service. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Click on Stop, wait for a few minutes and click on Start.
  4. Launch the application and see if the problem is solved.

Solution 5: Reinstalling the software

  1. Press Windows + R, type appwiz.cpl in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  2. Search for Oculus software, right-click it and select Uninstall.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Download the entire software package again from official website.
  5. Install the package and try launching it.
