Introduction

Last fall, we announced an important change affecting Power BI customers who use Embed for your customers with R or Python visuals. As part of our ongoing commitment to provide a secure, scalable, and reliable analytics platform, we periodically retire features that no longer align with evolving security requirements, platform performance goals, or supported embedding scenarios. This reminder is to help administrators prepare ahead of the upcoming retirement date.

When this will happen

  • Announcement and guidance: Customers were notified of this retirement on October 31, 2025, through Message center post MC1181999. Additional details were shared in the November Power BI blog.
  • Retirement date: Official support for embedding R and Python visuals in PaaS scenarios will end on May 1, 2026.
  • After retirement: Embedded Power BI reports or dashboards that contain R or Python visuals will continue to load, but those visuals will appear blank. Reports and dashboards without these visuals will continue to function as expected.

How this affects your organization

Who is affected

  • Power BI customers using Embed for your customers (app owns data) scenarios that include R or Python visuals.
  • Customers using Publish to web scenarios with R or Python visuals.

This change does not affect

  • Secure embedding to SharePoint, websites, or portals.
  • Embed for your organization (user owns data) scenarios.

What will happen

  • Starting May 1, 2026, Power BI will no longer support embedding reports and dashboards that contain R or Python visuals in Embed for your customers (also known as app owns data) and Publish to web scenarios.
  • Embed for your customers typically involves a custom application that manages authentication directly, and for which app users do not require Power BI licenses.
  • After support ends, embedded reports or dashboards that include R or Python visuals will continue to load, but those visuals will appear blank.
  • Reports and dashboards that do not contain R or Python visuals will continue to function as expected.

What you can do to prepare

  • Review all embedded Power BI reports and dashboards to identify any R or Python visuals.
  • Update or redesign affected reports using supported Power BI visuals or DAX-based analytics.
  • For advanced or technical analytics scenarios, consider using Fabric Notebooks as an alternative.
  • Communicate this change to helpdesk and support teams to prepare for potential user questions.
  • Update internal documentation that references R or Python visuals in embedded scenarios.
  • Review the Power BI and Fabric documentation for guidance on supported visual alternatives.

Note: We understand this retirement may require updates to existing solutions. For additional guidance, visit the Power BI community forums or contact your Microsoft account representative.
