Is PC Stuck on Old Windows 11 Version? Here’s the Fix for the Intel Smart Sound Blue Screen Problem.

Why Can’t My Intel PC Update to Windows 11 24H2 and How Do I Fix the Sound Driver Error?

The upgrade block preventing some computers from installing Windows 11, version 24H2, has been removed by Microsoft. If your computer has an 11th Generation Intel Core processor and was unable to update, this issue was likely caused by an incompatibility with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers that led to system crashes, but a solution is now available.

What Was the Problem?

When Microsoft released its major annual update, Windows 11 version 24H2, some users encountered a serious issue. After installing the update, their computers would crash and display a “blue screen,” often called a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). A blue screen is a safety measure your computer takes when it runs into an error so critical that it cannot continue to operate safely. It stops everything to prevent potential damage to your system or data.

Investigations by Microsoft and Intel found the root cause. The problem was specific to computers using 11th Gen Intel Core processors combined with certain older versions of the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) driver. When Windows 11 24H2 was installed on these systems, the new operating system software conflicted with the old sound driver software, forcing the computer to shut down. To protect users from this crash, Microsoft put a compatibility hold, or an “upgrade block,” in place. This action prevented the Windows 11 24H2 update from being offered or installed on any computer with the problematic driver, keeping those systems safe but stuck on an older version of Windows.

Understanding Intel Smart Sound Technology

You might not know what Intel Smart Sound Technology is, but it plays an important role in how your computer handles audio. It is a dedicated audio signal processor built to manage sound-related tasks efficiently.

  • Its main job is to take the workload of processing audio away from your computer’s main brain, the Central Processing Unit (CPU). This frees up the CPU to focus on other tasks, which can make your computer run faster and smoother.
  • This technology is also key for features that involve voice commands. If your computer supports waking up when you say a phrase like “Hey Cortana,” Intel SST is what is listening for your voice without draining your battery.
  • By handling audio more efficiently, it helps extend the battery life of laptops and other portable devices.

The specific driver file causing the blue screen errors was named IntcAudioBus.sys. The issue occurred if your system had driver version 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 installed. These versions contained code that was incompatible with the changes introduced in Windows 11 24H2.

The Solution is a Driver Update

After working together, Intel and Microsoft have resolved the incompatibility. Intel has released new versions of the Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers that work correctly with Windows 11 24H2. The problem is fixed by updating your drivers to a newer version.

To be safe, your computer needs the Intel SST driver to be at least version 10.30.00.5714 or 10.29.00.5714. It is important to note that a driver version starting with 10.30 is not necessarily newer or better than one starting with 10.29. Both version branches have received updates, so you must check the full version number to confirm you have the fix. Any version equal to or higher than the two listed above will solve the problem.

How to Get Your Computer Ready for Windows 11 24H2

Updating your system involves two key steps: first updating the driver, then updating Windows. Here is a guide to help you through the process.

Step 1: Check Your Current Driver Version

Before you do anything, you can see if your computer has the faulty driver.

  1. Click the Start button and type “Device Manager” into the search bar, then press Enter.
  2. In the Device Manager window, look for a category called System devices and click the arrow next to it to expand the list.
  3. Scroll down until you find Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology (Intel(R) SST) Audio Controller.
  4. Right-click on it and select Properties.
  5. In the new window, click on the Driver tab. Here you will see the Driver Version listed. If it matches 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152, your computer was affected by this issue.

Step 2: Run Windows Update to Install the New Driver

The easiest and recommended way to get the new driver is through Windows Update.

  1. Click the Start button and go to Settings.
  2. In the Settings window, select Windows Update.
  3. Click the Check for updates button. Your computer will search for available updates, including the new Intel SST driver.
  4. If the new driver is found, it will download and install automatically.

Step 3: Restart Your Computer

After the driver has finished installing, you should restart your computer. A restart ensures that the new driver software is fully loaded and active, replacing the old, problematic version.

What If the Update Still Doesn’t Work?

After you have updated your driver and restarted your computer, the Windows 11 24H2 update should become available to you through Windows Update. However, Microsoft notes that it may take up to 48 hours for the upgrade block to be lifted from your device. If you do not see the update offered right away, it is best to wait a day or two.

If 48 hours pass and you still cannot install the 24H2 update, it may be because a specific driver for your computer’s hardware has not been released yet. Sometimes, computer manufacturers like Dell, HP, Lenovo, or Acer use customized versions of drivers for the hardware in their machines. In this situation, the generic driver from Intel might not be pushed to your device.

If you find yourself in this situation, your next step should be to contact your computer manufacturer’s support service. They are responsible for providing the correct, customized drivers for your specific model. Check the support section of their website for driver downloads or contact their customer service for more information.

Why This Update Matters for You

Staying on an old version of Windows is not a good long-term plan. The Windows 11 23H2 version, which many affected users were stuck on, will stop receiving support for Home and Pro editions in November 2025.

  • Security: When support ends, Microsoft no longer releases security updates for that version. This leaves your computer vulnerable to viruses, malware, and other online threats that could compromise your personal data and financial information.
  • New Features: The 24H2 update is not just about security. It also brings a year’s worth of new features, performance improvements, and interface refinements that you miss out on by not updating.
  • Stability: This fix demonstrates that Microsoft and its partners are actively working to make the software experience more stable. By updating, you benefit from these ongoing efforts and ensure your computer runs as reliably as possible.
