Is Microsoft’s Hidden Plan Costing You Money? The Shocking Details of the Australian Lawsuit.

Are You Overpaying for Microsoft 365? How to Avoid This Costly and Deceptive Subscription Trap.

Microsoft is facing legal action in Australia. A consumer protection agency claims the company misled millions of people about its Microsoft 365 subscription plans. The issue began when Microsoft added its new artificial intelligence tool, Copilot, to its popular software suite and raised prices.

The Two Choices Presented to Customers

When the price increased, Microsoft told its subscribers they had two main options. They could either accept the higher price to keep their subscription with the new Copilot feature, or they could cancel their service entirely. This left many customers feeling like they had no choice but to pay more if they wanted to continue using the software.

A Third, Cheaper Option Was Concealed

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigated and found a third choice. This option, called the “Classic” plan, was not clearly communicated to customers.

  • The Classic plan allowed people to keep all the original Microsoft 365 features.
  • It did not include the new Copilot AI tool.
  • Crucially, it remained at the old, lower price.

The ACCC alleges that Microsoft intentionally hid the Classic plan. The agency believes the goal was to push more of its 2.7 million Australian subscribers onto the more expensive plans to increase profits. This information was reportedly only shown to users after they had already started the process of canceling their subscription.

Legal Consequences for Microsoft

The ACCC is now suing Microsoft for providing misleading information. The lawsuit seeks to hold the company accountable for its actions. If the court rules against Microsoft, the company could face significant penalties.

  1. Financial Penalties: The company may be ordered to pay a fine of up to $50 million or an even larger amount based on its revenue during the period.
  2. Consumer Refunds: Microsoft might have to pay back the extra money to customers who were pushed into the more expensive plan.
  3. Court Injunctions: A judge could order Microsoft to be more transparent about its pricing and plans in the future.

This situation serves as an important reminder for consumers. When a service changes its prices, it is wise to carefully examine all available options. Cheaper alternatives may exist, but they are not always presented upfront.
