Two Approaches to Deactivate Tab Hover Previews
Approach 1: Chrome Settings Menu
The Chrome settings menu provides an easy way to deactivate the snapshot preview of the tab. Here are the steps:
- Click the three-dots menu icon in the top-right to open the Chrome settings menu.
- Select Settings.
- In the Appearance section, toggle the Show images on tab hover preview cards option to Off.
With this, the tab previews will cease to appear. However, tab information like the page title and memory usage will still be visible.
Approach 2: Chrome Flags Menu
The Chrome flags menu, a hidden settings panel, can also be used to deactivate tab previews. Here’s how:
- Type chrome://flags into the address bar and press Enter.
- Search for Tab hover card in the search bar.
- Set the Tab Hover Card Images option to Disabled.
- Click Relaunch at the bottom to restart your browser.
After Chrome restarts, the preview image will no longer appear on hovering over tabs. To restore this feature, repeat these steps and set Tab Hover Card Images to Default or Enabled.

Tab hover previews in Chrome also display the tab’s current memory usage. If this information is not visible or you wish to hide it, you can do so via the Chrome flags menu:
- Type chrome://flags into the address bar and press Enter.
- Search for memory usage in hovercards.
- Set the Show memory usage in hovercards option to Disabled to hide it or to Enabled to display it.
- Click Relaunch in the bottom right to restart your browser.
