Why is there a plus button on my Google search bar?

Can I upload files directly to Google AI for analysis?

Google is currently testing a significant interface update that transforms the traditional Search bar into a multi-modal input tool. A specific subset of users now sees a “plus” icon within the search field. Engaging this button allows you to upload images and documents, such as PDFs, directly from the homepage. The system immediately processes these files using Google’s AI models, effectively bypassing the need to navigate to separate tools like the standalone Gemini interface. This integration reduces friction, placing advanced data analysis capabilities immediately at the entry point of the web.

Availability and Browser Compatibility

This feature is currently undergoing limited A/B testing. Initial reports from Reddit indicate that availability is sporadic and not tied to a specific account type. While primarily observed on Google Chrome, users have also confirmed functionality on Microsoft Edge. This cross-browser compatibility suggests Google aims to standardize this utility across the web ecosystem, rather than restricting it to its proprietary browser. If you do not see the icon yet, your account is likely outside the current test group.

Enhanced Citation and Sourcing

Parallel to the file upload experiment, Google is refining how AI Mode presents information. New hover-style inline links are being tested for citations. This user experience improvement allows you to view source verification cards simply by hovering over a link, rather than clicking through to the external page. This adjustment aims to build trust in AI-generated answers while keeping the user engaged within the search environment.

Global Model Expansion

Google has simultaneously broadened the infrastructure supporting these features. Access to advanced models, specifically Gemini 3 and Nano Banana Pro, has expanded to nearly 120 countries and territories. While these powerful reasoning models are currently gated behind Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, their global deployment lays the groundwork for more complex, real-time document analysis for a wider audience.

Strategic Implications

These distinct updates signal a unified strategy: Google is evolving Search from an indexing engine into a workspace for active interpretation. By embedding file readers and advanced citations directly into the search bar, Google encourages users to treat the homepage as a destination for task completion rather than just a gateway to other sites.
