Could Flashes Be the Amazing Photo App That Finally Beats Instagram's Terrible Privacy Problems?
I've been watching social media apps come and go for years. Most promise big changes but deliver the same old problems. Flashes is different. Let me tell you why this app caught my attention and why you might want to try it too.
What Makes Flashes Special
Flashes brings back something we lost. Remember when Instagram was just about sharing great photos? Before all the ads, algorithms, and privacy headaches? That's what Flashes does. It's built on Bluesky's network, which means it works differently than the big tech apps you're used to.
Here's what makes it stand out:
- No sneaky algorithms deciding what you see
- Your data stays yours - no selling your info to advertisers
- Photos come first - like Instagram used to be
- Works with Bluesky - so your friends are already there
Sebastian Vogelsang, a developer from Berlin, created this app. He also made Skeets, another Bluesky app. The guy knows what he's doing.
Getting Started Is Easy
You need two things to use Flashes:
- An iPhone with iOS 17 or newer
- A Bluesky account (it's free)
Android users have to wait. No word yet on when that version comes out.
Once you download Flashes from the App Store, just log in with your Bluesky info. That's it. All your Bluesky friends show up automatically.
How Flashes Actually Works
The app pulls photos and videos from your Bluesky feed. Then it shows them in a clean, Instagram-style layout. Simple.
When you post on Flashes, it also appears on your regular Bluesky timeline. Everything stays connected. Your followers on both platforms see your content.
Each post can have up to four photos or one video (up to one minute long). That's more flexible than many other apps.
Setting Up Your Profile
Your Flashes profile looks familiar if you've used Instagram. Your photo goes at the top. Your username and follower counts sit right below. You can add a bio too.
But Flashes gives you more control. You can choose to show or hide:
- Like counts
- Lists you've made
- Custom feeds
- Other profile details
The Portfolio Feature
This is where Flashes gets interesting. The Portfolio tab lets you create a curated grid of your best work. Think of it as your highlight reel.
To set it up:
- Tap "Edit profile"
- Turn on "Enable Portfolio"
- Go to "Portfolio Settings" then "Manage Portfolio"
- Pick the images you want to feature
- Return to your profile to see them displayed
Creating Posts That People Actually See
Making a new post feels natural. Tap the big plus button at the bottom. Choose a photo from your gallery or take a new one.
The editing tools are straightforward:
- Add filters by swiping through options
- Write a description (keep it real, not salesy)
- Set who can reply to your post
- Add tags so people can find your content
Unlike Instagram, you can add text overlays, stickers, and other fun stuff to make your posts pop.
Finding Content You Care About
The home feed shows posts from people you follow by default. But you can switch to other views:
- Trending: Popular posts on Flashes right now
- Bluesky Images: Photos from across the Bluesky network
- Discover: New accounts and content to explore
The search function works like you'd expect. Type keywords to find posts, users, or topics. The Feeds feature is particularly useful - you can follow specific interests like "books" or "photography" to get targeted content.
Direct Messages Work Too
Need to chat privately? Flashes has DMs. Find them by tapping the paper plane icon in the top left of your home feed. The interface mirrors Instagram's messaging system, so you'll feel right at home.
What About Short Videos?
Flashes doesn't have a dedicated Reels section yet. But there's a workaround:
- Go to Search > Feeds
- Search for "video"
- Add the "by Bluesky" feed
- Return to Home and switch to the Video tab
Now you can browse short-form videos from across the network.
Why I Think This Matters
Social media feels broken right now. Too many ads. Too much drama. Too little control over your own content and data.
Flashes offers something different. It's not perfect - no Android app yet, smaller user base, still growing its features. But it gets the basics right.
The app focuses on what made photo sharing fun in the first place. Good photos. Real connections. No corporate manipulation of what you see.
If you're tired of Instagram's privacy problems and want to try something new, Flashes deserves a look. Download it, play around for a week, and see how it feels.
The worst that happens? You delete it and go back to your old apps. The best? You find a better way to share your photos online.
That's worth 10 minutes of your time, don't you think?
