Why Do These Troublesome Windows 11 Update and Lock Screen Issues Keep Happening?

Is There An Easy Way to Overcome Common Windows Start Menu and Search Problems?

Windows can sometimes behave in unexpected ways. Knowing about these issues can help you find workarounds and understand that the problem isn’t with your specific computer. Here are a few known bugs affecting Windows 11 and Windows Server users.

The Update and Shut Down Problem

You may have noticed an issue with the “Update and shut down” option. You select it expecting the computer to install updates and then turn off completely. Instead, the computer installs the updates and then restarts, bringing you back to the lock screen.

This is a long-standing issue in Windows 11, and some people experienced it in Windows 10 as well. It forces you to shut down the PC a second time. Microsoft has acknowledged this bug and is testing a fix that should make the function work as intended. The fix will ensure your computer stays off after you choose to update and shut down.

A Peculiar Lock Screen Glitch

A strange visual glitch can occur on the Windows 11 lock screen if you use multiple monitors. The bug makes a window remain visible even after you have locked your PC.

Here is how it happens:

  1. You must be using more than one monitor.
  2. Hover your mouse over an application in the taskbar so that its preview window appears. The application must be on a secondary monitor, not your main one.
  3. While the preview is visible, lock your computer by pressing the Windows key + L.

The result is that the application’s window stays on the screen, layered over the lock screen. You cannot interact with the window, but its presence is a noticeable bug.

Start Menu and Search Issues on RDS

System administrators using Windows Server 2022 have reported a difficult issue with Remote Desktop Services (RDS). When new user accounts are added to the server, they may find that the Start menu and the search function do not work at all.

This problem appears to affect the most recently created user profiles on an RDS server. The Start menu will not open, and the search bar will not respond, making it very difficult for those users to navigate the system. Currently, a clear solution for this problem has not been widely shared, leaving some administrators looking for answers.
