Halo – Fatal Error is prompt when users start to play the Halo Combat Evolved (CE). The detail of error message as below:
We are sorry, but you need to have DirectX 9.0b installed to run this program. Please run Halo PC setup again to install DirectX.

Solution 1: Reinstall Direct X 9.0b
- Download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from Official Microsoft Download Center.
- Double-click on the downloaded executable to start the DirectX installation and accept the UAC (User Account Control) prompt if needed. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
- Restart your computer.
Solution 2: Install Halo CE patch 1.0.10 from Bungie
- Visit Halo Forums to download Halo CE 1.0.10 patch from Bungie.
- Double-click on the downloaded executable and click on the UAC (User Account Control) prompt to grant admin access.
- The installer should automatically find and replace Halo CE game files with the new patch.
- Restart your computer.
Solution 3: Execute Halo CE in compatibility mode
- Right-click on the HALO CE launch shortcut on the Desktop and choose Properties from the context menu.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Check the box beside Run this program in compatibility mode for: and choose Windows 7 from the drop-down menu.
- Click Apply and OK button to save the change.
- Launch the game again.
Solution 4: Install Halo CE CE (Custom Edition)
- Visit Halo CE Maps to download Halo Custom Edition Game (CE) installation archive.
- Double-click on the downloaded installation executable and click Yes at the User Account Control prompt to grant admin access.
- Click the Agree button with the License Agreement and choose a location to start the installation of Halo CE CE (Custom Edition).
- Click the Install button to start the installation.
- Enter your license key and complete the installation.
- Restart your computer.
