Is Apple TV Feeling Outdated? Discover the Easiest Way to Get the New tvOS 26 Beta

Getting the latest software on your Apple TV can make your viewing experience feel brand new. With tvOS 26, Apple is introducing some exciting changes that refresh the look and add new, fun things to do. This guide is here to walk you through the process of trying out these new features before they are released to everyone. We will explain what you get with the update, which devices can run it, and exactly how to install it. Keep in mind that using beta software can sometimes be a frustrating process because it is still being tested, so it is best for those who are comfortable with technology that might not work perfectly yet.

What’s New in tvOS 26?

The tvOS 26 update is more than just a number change; it brings a significant visual and functional upgrade to your television.

The most noticeable change is the new Liquid Glass interface. This design gives menus and icons a see-through, glassy look that seems to float on your screen. It’s designed to make browsing for shows and movies more immersive and visually appealing, with cinematic poster art getting more of the spotlight. Another major addition is to Apple Music Sing, which now allows you to use your iPhone as a microphone for karaoke night. You can sing along with lyrics on the screen, and even connect multiple iPhones for duets or group performances.

Beyond these headline features, the update also includes new screen savers, with several new locations in India, and makes it easier to switch between user profiles.

Will tvOS 26 Work on Your Apple TV?

Apple has made tvOS 26 available for a wide range of devices, including some that are several years old. However, not every feature will work on every model.

The following Apple TV devices are compatible with the main tvOS 26 update :

  • Apple TV HD (2015)
  • Apple TV 4K (1st generation, 2017)
  • Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021)
  • Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022)

It is important to know that the new Liquid Glass design requires the power of a newer device and is only available on the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later models. Similarly, the karaoke feature in Apple Music Sing needs an iPhone running the latest software and an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) or newer.

How to Install the tvOS 26 Beta

Installing the beta version of tvOS 26 is a straightforward process. Following these steps will get the new software running on your compatible Apple TV.

Step 1: Enroll in the Beta Program

Before you can download the beta, you must sign up your Apple ID with Apple’s Beta Software Program. You can do this on Apple’s website from any device. You have two choices: the Public Beta, which is generally more stable, or the Developer Beta, which is updated more frequently but may have more bugs. For most people, the Public Beta is the better option.

Step 2: Turn On Beta Updates on Your Apple TV

  1. Once your account is enrolled, go to your Apple TV.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Go to System, and then select Software Updates.
  4. Choose the option called Get Beta Updates.
  5. From the menu, select either tvOS 26 Public Beta or tvOS 26 Developer Beta, depending on which program you joined.

Step 3: Download and Install the Update

After you have enabled beta updates, you are ready to install the software.

  1. Return to the main Software Update screen.
  2. Choose to download and install the tvOS 26 beta update when it appears.
  3. Your Apple TV will handle the rest. It will download the file, install it, and restart. When it turns back on, it will be running tvOS 26.

Future updates to the beta software will arrive automatically, or you can check for them manually on the same Software Updates screen. You can also turn off beta updates at any time from the same menu if you decide to go back to the public software releases.
