Is your PC ready for the Windows 11 25H2 manual upgrade?

Why is the Windows 11 25H2 update not showing up in settings?

Microsoft has officially transitioned Windows 11, version 25H2, to “General Availability” as of December 4, 2025. This designation signals that the operating system is considered stable for broad deployment across consumer and commercial devices.

If your system configuration is compatible, the update mechanism will now offer this version automatically. This rollout utilizes a machine-learning model to prioritize devices that show the highest probability of a successful, error-free installation. Users who previously activated the toggle “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” within Windows Update will see this upgrade first.

Understanding the Architecture: 24H2 vs. 25H2

It is crucial to understand that version 25H2 and its predecessor, version 24H2, share an identical codebase. They function on the same core architecture. Consequently, the transition between these two versions is seamless rather than disruptive.

However, this shared foundation implies that any known bugs or technical limitations present in version 24H2 persist in version 25H2. The stability of the new version mirrors the stability of the previous one. Microsoft views this release as ready for production use, but users should expect a similar performance profile to their current 24H2 environment.

Upgrade Pathways

You can initiate the move to version 25H2 through three distinct methods depending on your current system status.

The Automatic Phased Rollout

Microsoft employs a “safeguard hold” strategy. The update service scans your device telemetry for incompatible drivers or applications. If the system detects no conflicts, it pushes the update. This applies primarily to unmanaged Home and Pro editions. No user action is required; the device will download the necessary files and prompt for a restart when ready.

Manual Installation

To force a check for eligibility:

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.

If your hardware passes the compatibility check, the option “Download and install Windows 11, version 25H2” will appear. If this option remains absent, your device likely has a specific compatibility block preventing the upgrade to ensure system stability.

The Enablement Package (KB5054156)

For devices already running version 24H2, the upgrade process is remarkably fast. Because the codebases are identical, you do not need a full operating system download. Instead, the system uses “Enablement Package KB5054156.”

This small update file acts as a configuration switch. It activates features already dormant in the system files and increments the build number to 25H2. A single restart completes this process. This method is available via Windows Update for consumers and WSUS for managed enterprise environments.

Enterprise and Managed Environments

For corporate devices managed by IT departments, the “General Availability” status does not trigger an automatic update. System administrators maintain full control over the deployment schedule.

IT professionals must approve version 25H2 within their management consoles (such as Intune or WSUS) before end-user devices attempt to download it. This protocol ensures that organizations can validate their internal software against the new version before authorizing a fleet-wide deployment.
