Is Windows 11 Notepad’s Markdown Formatting a Pleasant Upgrade for Everyday Users?

Can Windows 11 Notepad’s New Markdown Tools Make Simple Text Editing Easier?

Windows 11 Notepad now supports rich text formatting with Markdown, making it much more useful for anyone who wants to style text quickly. I updated Notepad from the Microsoft Store on my regular computer, not a test version, and saw a message letting me know that Markdown features were ready to use.

What You Can Do With Markdown in Notepad

  • Headings: Tap the new “H1” icon. Pick a heading style: title, subtitle, section, or subsection.
  • Lists: Use bullet or numbered list buttons to organize your ideas.
  • Bold and Italics: Highlight text and click the bold or italics buttons to add emphasis.
  • Links: Press Ctrl + K (the same shortcut as in Word) to add a hyperlink. The link opens in your default web browser.
  • Formatting View: Click the “Formatting view” button at the bottom of the screen to switch between regular text and Markdown syntax.

Markdown Syntax View

In syntax view, you can:

  • Use hashes (#) to make headings.
  • Add asterisks (*) for bold or italics.
  • Put code inside backticks (`).

This view is like working in a plain Markdown editor, but it doesn’t change how your text looks when you switch back. It’s just a different way to write and see your notes.

Turning Markdown On or Off

By Default: Markdown is turned on when you open Notepad after updating.

To Remove Formatting: Click the clean-formatting button to go back to the classic Notepad look. This keeps Markdown support available, but removes any styles from your current document.

To Disable Markdown: Open Settings, scroll to the “Formatting” option, and turn it off. This hides the formatting bar and stops Windows from asking you to use it.

Performance

Markdown in Notepad is lightweight. It doesn’t slow down your computer, even on older machines.

Optional Features

Some people worry that adding features to Notepad takes away from its simple, plain-text roots. But Markdown is optional. You can turn it on or off in Settings, so you get to choose how you want Notepad to work. There’s also a Copilot AI Writer and Rewriter feature. If you don’t want it, you can disable it too.

Key Benefits

  • Easy Formatting: You can make headings, lists, and links without leaving Notepad.
  • No Extra Software Needed: Everything works inside the app you already have.
  • Flexible: Switch between styled text and plain Markdown code whenever you want.
  • Stays Fast: The new features don’t slow down your computer.

How to Use the New Features

  1. Update Notepad from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open Notepad. You’ll see a message about Markdown.
  3. Try the new formatting buttons at the top.
  4. Use keyboard shortcuts, like Ctrl + K for links.
  5. Switch views with the Formatting view button.

If You Prefer the Old Notepad

Use the clean-formatting button for plain text. Turn off Formatting in Settings to hide all new features.

Notepad has been a simple tool for years. Now, with Markdown, it can help you write notes, lists, and even simple documents with style. You don’t have to learn anything complicated. The buttons and shortcuts are easy to find and use. If you like things simple, you can keep Notepad just the way it was.
