Is the Terrible New Windows Update Causing Your Keyboard and Mouse to Fail in Recovery Mode?

Struggling With the Latest Windows 11 Update? Your Ultimate Guide to Fixing the Awful Recovery Bug.

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft provided new updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11. These are not typical security patches. Instead, they focus on improving the tools your computer uses to fix itself.

These are called Safe OS Dynamic Updates. Their main job is to make the Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE, better. WinRE is the special screen you see when Windows has a problem starting. It helps you troubleshoot, restore, or reset your computer. A healthy WinRE is important for a stable PC.

Updates for Windows 11 and Windows 10

Microsoft released several of these updates. They are for different versions of Windows, so you will only see the one that applies to your system.

  • For Windows 11: The key updates are KB5067039 (for version 24H2) and KB5067019 (for versions 23H2 and 22H2).
  • For Windows 10: Updates include KB5068164 and KB5067017, among others for various versions like 22H2, 21H2, and 1809.
  • For Windows Server: Updates such as KB5067014 and KB5067020 were also released for server systems.

A Serious Problem to Know About

A significant issue has appeared with these updates. After installing them, your USB keyboard and mouse may not work inside the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This is a serious problem. If you need to use WinRE to fix your computer, you might be unable to click or type anything.

This issue makes it difficult to use the recovery tools when you need them most. Microsoft has not yet released an official fix. You should be aware of this problem before you decide to install these specific updates, especially if you rely on WinRE for system maintenance.
