Is the frustrating Windows “Update and Shut Down” restart bug finally fixed for good?

Want an awesome fix to guarantee your PC shuts down properly after a Windows update?

For many years, the “Update and shut down” option in Windows did not work as expected. You would select this option, expecting your computer to install updates and then turn off completely. Instead, the computer would often restart and wait for you at the login screen. This was a known bug in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Many people thought they had made a mistake, but it was a problem with the operating system itself.

Microsoft has now corrected this issue. Starting with Windows 11 version 25H2 (Build 26200.7019 or newer), the “Update and shut down” function will perform as its name suggests. The fix was included in the optional update released in October 2025, identified as KB5067036. When you choose to update and shut down, your PC will now stay off after the update process is complete.

The problem occurred because updating Windows is a multi-step process.

  1. Windows begins by installing the update files while you are still using the computer.
  2. It must then restart to a special mode to finish applying the updates. This is when you see the “working on updates” screen.
  3. After this restart, the system was supposed to remember the original command to shut down, but it often failed to do so. The command was lost during the reboot process.

With this new patch, the command to shut down is correctly passed along through the entire update cycle. Your computer will now remember to power off after the updates are fully installed. This simple fix resolves a long-standing issue, allowing you to confidently leave your PC to update without returning to find it still running.
