What’s the Safest Way to Reset or Edit the Normal.dotm File in Microsoft Word?
The Normal template, called Normal.dotm, is the main file that controls the way new Word documents look. When you open a fresh document in Microsoft Word, it uses this template. If you change it, every new blank document will follow your updates. This is helpful if you want custom fonts, headings, spacing, or other default settings every time you start a new document.
Steps to Change the Normal.dotm Template
Step 1: Make a Backup First
Find your existing Normal.dotm file, and copy it somewhere safe. This lets you put things back the way they were if something goes wrong.
Step 2: View Hidden Files and Folders
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to the View tab and make sure “Hidden items” is checked.
Step 3: Find the Normal.dotm File
- Go to: C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
- Replace your-username with the name you use to log in to your PC.
Step 4: Open Normal.dotm in Word
Double-click Normal.dotm. It should open as a document in Word.
If another file opens (like Document1), use this quick fix:
- Open Word.
- Press Alt + F11 to go to the VBA editor.
- Press Ctrl + G.
- Type: NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument and press Enter. Now the real Normal template will appear.
Step 5: Make Your Changes
- Change fonts, font sizes, styles, margins, or anything you want using the regular Word commands.
- To change styles, right-click on a style in the Styles box, pick Modify….
- You can rename styles, set formatting (font, size, color), change alignment, line spacing, indentation, and add or remove from the Styles gallery.
- Decide if this change is only for now or for all future new files based on this template.
Step 6: Save Your Changes
- Go to the File menu in Word, choose Save.
- Closing Word will prompt you to save again if needed.
Next time you start with a blank document in Word, your new settings will appear automatically.
Resetting or Restoring Normal.dotm
If you want Word to go back to factory defaults:
Rename or Delete Normal.dotm
- Go to the Templates folder.
- Rename Normal.dotm to something like Normal.old.
- Or, just delete it.
When you open Word again, it creates a fresh, default Normal.dotm with standard settings.
Replace With a Backup
If you backed up the original file, copy it back into the Templates folder to bring back your old setup.
Restoring Text to Default Format in Any Document
- Open the document.
- Highlight the text you want to reset.
- On the Home tab, click the little Clear All Formatting icon (it looks like an eraser or an ‘A’ with a rubber).
- All special formatting in the selected text will disappear, and it’ll go back to your default template’s look.
Helpful Tips
- Always back up Normal.dotm before making changes.
- Only edit Normal.dotm when Word is closed, unless you’re opening it for editing as above.
- If Word isn’t behaving as expected after editing Normal.dotm, restoring your backup or letting Word create a new template will often fix the problem.
Changing your Word template puts you in control, giving you a faster and more comfortable experience every time you open a new document. It’s easy to do safely when you follow these clear steps.
