This article discusses the ‘EXT2-fs (sda5): warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended’ message on device event log.
Scope
FortiSwitch-1024E and 1048E, v7.2 and above.
Solution
It is possible to observe several log entries for this kind of event on Fortiswitches, after a ungracefull reboot:
25: 2024-02-26 19:20:27 EXT2-fs (sda5): warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
Those were generated constantly until a storage check was performed. To do it, use a serial console connection and gracefully reboot the device:
FSW # exe reboot This operation will reboot the system ! Do you want to continue? (y/n)y System is rebooting... FSW# Saving config. The system is going down NOW !! Please stand by while rebooting the system. reboot: Restarting system
While rebooting, choose ‘yes’ when FortiSwitch prompts to execute the storage check:
FortiSwitch-1048E (22:35-06.14.2023) BIOS version : 04000024 Serial number: FS1E48TXXXXXXXX Please wait for OS to boot, or press any key to display configuration menu... 1 0 Booting default partition : FortiSwitch-1048E v7.2.8,build0495,240524 System is started. EXT2-fs (sda2): warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended Do you want to run e2fsck? Will continue to boot if no input in 5 seconds (y/n) [n] Do you want to run e2fsck? Will continue to boot if no input in 4 seconds (y/n) [n] y
After some minutes (depending on the device config), the device will restart and those messages will no longer be generated.
It is important to verify and correct errors on device storage after a non gracefully reboot as soon as possible to maintain device stability.
