How do I move the Windows 11 volume popup back to the top left?

Is it possible to customize where the brightness slider appears on my screen?

Windows 11 introduced a modernized design language that relocated hardware indicators—often called On-Screen Displays (OSD) or flyouts—to the bottom-center of the screen. These indicators provide visual confirmation when you adjust volume, brightness, or toggle Airplane mode via keyboard shortcuts.

While the new placement aligns with the centered Taskbar, it disrupts the workflow for users accustomed to the Windows 10 standard, where indicators appeared vertically at the top-left. For creative professionals and power users, the bottom-center overlay often obscures critical content or subtitles. Microsoft has addressed this feedback in recent builds (specifically version 25H2 and later), allowing you to customize this placement.

Method 1: The Settings App (Recommended)

The safest method to relocate these indicators is through the native Windows Settings. This option is available if your operating system is fully updated.

  1. Press WIN + I to open the Settings app. Alternatively, right-click the Start button and select Settings.
  2. Select the System tab in the left sidebar. In the main pane, click on Notifications.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Notifications menu. Locate the section labeled Indicators from keyboard actions. You will see a setting named Position of on-screen indicators.
  4. Click the dropdown menu and choose your desired location. The change applies immediately without requiring a restart.

Method 2: Registry Editor (Advanced)

If the option allows, or if you prefer manual configuration, you can enforce this setting via the Registry.

Note: Modifying the Registry involves risk. Create a system restore point before proceeding to ensure you can revert changes if necessary.

  1. Press WIN + R. Type regedit and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SystemSettings\ConfirmatorPosition
  3. If the ConfirmatorPosition key does not exist, right-click the parent SystemSettings key, select New > Key, and name it ConfirmatorPosition.
  4. Look for a DWORD (32-bit) Value named PositionIndex. If it is missing, right-click the empty space, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it PositionIndex.
  5. Double-click PositionIndex and enter one of the following numeric values to set the position:
    • 1: Bottom-center (Windows 11 Default)
    • 2: Top-left (Windows 10 Style)
    • 3: Top-center
  6. The system applies these changes instantly upon saving.

Understanding the Placement Limitations

You may notice that options for bottom-left, bottom-right, or top-right are unavailable. This restriction is intentional design logic by Microsoft to prevent UI conflicts:

  • Bottom Corners: Placing indicators here would obscure the Start Menu (left) or the System Tray/Notification Center (right).
  • Top-Right: This location is reserved for window control buttons (Minimize, Maximize, Close), and an overlay here would block essential interaction.
