What You’ll Need
- Goldberg’s Steam emulator (to “duplicate” the program and make it function independently of Steam).
- A copy of your Desktop Mate folder.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Open Steam, go to your Library, find Desktop Mate.
- Click the Cog icon > Manage > Browse Local Files. Alternatively, navigate to steamapps/common in the drive where Steam is installed.
- Copy the entire Desktop Mate folder and paste it somewhere else (e.g., your desktop).
- Rename the copied folder to something unique, like Desktop Mate 2.
- Download Goldberg’s Steam emulator (search for it on GitLab).
- Extract the .zip file. Inside, locate a file named steam_api64.dll.
- For Linux users, open the linux folder inside the .zip, then go to x86_64 and find libsteam_api.so.
- Go to your renamed Desktop Mate folder (Desktop Mate 2). Navigate to DesktopMate_data > Plugins > x86_64.
- Find the file named steam_api64.dll (or libsteam_api.so for Linux). If it’s missing, reinstall Desktop Mate to restore it.
- Delete this file and replace it with the corresponding file from Goldberg’s emulator.
- Launch both the original Desktop Mate and your newly created one. If everything is set up correctly, you’ll see two desktop buddies running independently!
Extra Tips
- Customize each buddy with different characters for variety.
- If something doesn’t work, double-check folder paths and file replacements.
