Google Certified Gemini Faculty: How Do the Instructions and Knowledge Fields Work Together When Training a Gem?

When training a Gem, what is the relationship between the “Instructions” field and the “Knowledge” field?

The “Instructions” field must explicitly direct the Gem on how and when to use the files uploaded to the “Knowledge” field.

The Instructions field defines the Gem’s behavior, objectives, and decision-making process. It tells the Gem what to do, how to respond, and when to reference supporting materials.

The Knowledge field contains documents, files, and reference materials that the Gem can use to provide more accurate, context-specific answers. However, simply uploading files does not guarantee they will be used effectively. The Instructions should clearly explain how the Gem should access, prioritize, and apply the information contained in those files.

Think of Instructions as the operating guide and Knowledge as the reference library. The Instructions tell the Gem how to perform its task, while the Knowledge files provide the information needed to perform that task accurately and consistently.
