Why Is Outlook 365 Causing Frustrating CPU Spikes-and When Will the Fix Arrive?

Can You Expect a Powerful Solution to Outlook 365’s High CPU Usage Soon?

Many users of Microsoft Outlook 365 (Classic) have recently experienced significant performance issues, particularly high CPU usage when typing emails. Microsoft has officially acknowledged this frustrating problem and announced a timeline for a solution.

What’s Happening with Outlook 365 and CPU Spikes?

  • Users report CPU usage jumping by 30–50% when composing emails in the classic Outlook for Windows.
  • This issue leads to increased power consumption and can slow down your computer.
  • The problem started after updating to version 2406 (build 17726.20126) or later, affecting users on the Current Channel, Monthly Enterprise Channel, and Insider Channels.
  • You can observe the spike by monitoring your CPU load in Task Manager while typing in Outlook.

Microsoft’s Response and Fix Timeline

Microsoft has investigated and identified the root cause. The Word development team has implemented a fix, and Microsoft has shared a clear rollout schedule:

  • Beta Channel: Version 2505 (build 18822.15000) – Expected early May 2025
  • Current Channel Preview: Version 2505 (build 18827.20000) – Expected mid-May 2025
  • Current Channel: Version 2505 (build 18827.20000) – Expected end of May 2025

Additional Notes and Workarounds

The issue is now also affecting users on the Semi Annual Channel. If you need an urgent workaround, you can revert to version 2405. However, Microsoft does not recommend this, as you’ll miss out on important security updates. For detailed instructions on reverting versions or more information, consult the official Microsoft support article.

Outlook 365 users can expect relief from these disruptive performance issues soon, thanks to Microsoft’s prompt and transparent response.
