Tired of Rewatching Entire Seasons? How Does Amazon Prime’s AI Video Recap Feature Work?
Amazon has officially unveiled Video Recaps, a revolutionary generative AI feature designed to help Prime Video viewers effortlessly recall key plot points without rewatching entire seasons. This “theatrical-quality” visual tool creates dynamic video summaries, ensuring fans are fully prepared before diving into new episodes.
This update follows the introduction of X-Ray Recaps in November 2024, which offered concise, spoiler-free text summaries. While X-Ray Recaps provided quick context, the new Video Recaps feature elevates the experience by transforming static information into an engaging, audio-visual narrative.
How It Works: A Multistep AI Process
Unlike simple fan edits, Amazon’s Video Recaps utilize sophisticated generative AI to construct a cohesive story. The system follows a precise automated workflow:
- Analysis: The AI scans entire seasons to identify pivotal character arcs, essential plot twists, and emotional high points.
- Curation: It selects the most relevant video clips and dialogue snippets that best summarize the narrative.
- Production: The engine synchronizes these visual elements with background music, sound effects, and AI-generated voiceover narration.
- Result: A polished, standalone video summary that viewers can watch to instantly get up to speed.
Supported Series and Availability
Currently, Video Recaps is in beta and available exclusively for select English-language Prime Original series in the U.S. Supported titles include:
- Fallout
- Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan
- Upload
- Bosch
- The Rig
How to Access Video Recaps
To use this feature, navigate to the detail page of a supported show on your “living room device” (such as a Fire TV or smart TV).
- Select the season you wish to watch.
- Look for the new Recap button alongside the “Play” or “Resume” options.
- Clicking this will launch the AI-generated video summary (or offer the text-based X-Ray Recap).
Note: Amazon plans to expand device support beyond TV interfaces to mobile and web platforms in the coming months.
This launch is part of Amazon’s wider strategy to integrate AI into its entertainment ecosystem. Alongside these viewer-centric features, Amazon continues to develop Vega OS, a Linux-based operating system for Fire TV devices, and is actively implementing stricter measures to block piracy apps, ensuring a secure and premium viewing environment.
