Answer 1

You can back up WhatsApp chats and media to Google Drive, so that you can transfer it if you switch Android phones or get a new one or lost old phone.

You can back up WhatsApp data using Google Drive and/or a local backup. Local backups will be automatically created every day at 2 a.m. and they will be saved as a file in the phone and on Google Drive.

WhatsApp will ask you to restore chats history and media from a backup after you verify your number. Simply tap Restore when prompted to. If WhatsApp does not detect a backup, it could due to one of the following reasons:

  • You aren’t logged into the same Google account.
  • You aren’t using the same phone number that was used to create the backup.
  • Your SD card and/or chat history is corrupted.
  • A backup file does not exist on the Google Drive account or locally on your phone.

Answer 2

The easiest way to transfer data to a new phone is by using Google Drive.

If you want to use a local backup, you will need to transfer the files to the new phone using a computer, file explorer or SD Card.

If your data is not stored on the default path (/internal storage/whatsapp/ folder), you may see “internal storage” or “main storage” folders.

Answer 3

It depends on the type of database, older or newer or saved on drive/internal memory:

  • On newer devices, WhatsApp/Databases folder is most likely located in the device’s internal memory.
  • You must have the same phone number in WhatsApp that you had when you backed up the chat’s history and media.
  • Your backup files are saved in the /sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder which located in either device’s internal memory or external memory.

Follow below steps to restore WhatsApp chat history and media from local backup database:

Step 1: Download a File Manager app.

Step 2: Navigate to the local storage or sdcard > WhatsApp > Databases. …. If your data isn’t stored on an SD card, you might see “internal storage” or “main storage” instead.

Step 3: Copy or Moves all media like Pictures, Gifs & Videos etc. to external storage or move in any other folder.

Step 4: Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It’s possible that an earlier backup might be on an earlier protocol, such as crypt8, crypt9, or crypt10. Don’t change the number of the crypt extension.

Step 5: Uninstall the WhatsApp app.

Step 6: Install the WhatsApp app.

Step 7: Tap the Restore option when asked. You will get back your text, media etc.

WhatsApp will ask you to recover backup data from Google Drive. Check the option of recovering data from Google Drive and tap the Restore option when asked. You will get back your text, media etc.

Warning: You can’t restore your messages, if:

  • SD card and/or chat history is corrupted.
  • WhatsApp cannot restore backups that are too old.
  • You have a different phone number than when you backed up your chats.
  • You do not have any chat history backups saved in the phone or Google Drive.

Answer 4

WhatsApp regularly backs up message chats history and media to Google Drive. So, you can restore them from there.

Select the Clear Data option for WhatsApp in the apps page in the settings then start the app. It will setup like it’s the first-time use. When it finds the backup file from Google Drive, it will prompt for restoration. Your message history and media will now be restored to your device.
