Introduction

Microsoft is introducing a free upgrade path for eligible K‑12 education tenants to move devices from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro Education. This enables organizations to standardize on Pro Education and apply enterprise-grade management, security, and policy controls on eligible devices.

When this will happen

General Availability (Worldwide): Rollout will begin in late June 2026 and is expected to complete by mid-October 2026

How this affects your organization

Who is affected:

  • K‑12 education institutions only
  • IT administrators managing devices in tenants classified as Academic (K‑12 segment)
  • Organizations using Microsoft Entra ID with a verified academic domain

What will happen:

  • Eligible devices running Windows 11 Home can be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro Education at no additional cost.
  • Devices upgraded to Pro Education will gain:
    • Enterprise-grade device management capabilities.
    • Enhanced security and compliance controls.
    • Support for organizational policies and configuration via IT admins.
  • The upgrade requires admin initiation and is not automatic.
  • No impact to devices that are not enrolled or do not meet eligibility criteria.

What you can do to prepare

  • The school domain must be verified as Academic.
  • The organization segment must be K‑12 only.
  • Admin must sign in using a school IT administrator account associated with a valid K‑12 Education tenant and Academic Entra ID domain.
  • Admin must run the provided upgrade script.
  • Restart the device to complete the upgrade.

  1. Sign in to the device using a local account.
  2. Launch an elevated Command Prompt and initiate the upgrade by running Clipupgrade.exe.
  3. Confirm the upgrade when prompted.
  4. Sign in with your K–12 organization account to validate eligibility.
  5. The device prepares the upgrade and completes after a restart.

Note: This upgrade is one-way only. Reverting to Windows Home is not supported without a clean OS reinstall.
