Custom theming for model-driven apps using the modern, refreshed look has been available in preview since October 2023. This capability allows organizations to align model-driven apps with their branding by customizing colors, fonts, and app header styling using the Microsoft Fluent 2 design system. As of March 31, 2026, custom theming will reach general availability.

How does this affect me?

Classic theming is not honored with the modern, refreshed look, which is becoming mandatory for model-driven apps in April 2026. The supported theming replacement with the modern look is custom modern themes, which gives makers the ability to:

  • Apply a cohesive color scheme across the app based on a single base color, including hyperlinks, primary buttons, active tab indicators, row selection, and hover effects.
  • Customize the app header background and text colors, including hover, pressed, and selected states.
  • Set a custom logo for the app header to reinforce organizational branding. Note: Custom logo support in the modern theme XML is currently rolling out and will be available in all regions by the end of April 2026.
  • Override the default font used throughout the application.

These customizations are applied through an XML web resource and can be scoped to your environment using the Custom theme definition app setting.

What action do I need to take?

To take advantage of custom theming, we recommend doing the following:

  • If your organization was using classic themes, create a new custom theme XML web resource that reflects your branding. Follow the steps in the documentation to apply it to your environment.
  • Update internal documentation and training materials to reference the new custom theming approach instead of classic theming.
  • Report any issues or unexpected behavior through Microsoft Support so we can investigate.
