Introduction

Advanced resource sets introduce the ability to define custom pattern rules for grouping files that share a schema within a folder, enabling more precise and efficient management of resource set assets in Microsoft Purview. This feature supports data aggregation, schema updates, deletion detection, and more intuitive lineage visualization.

This message is associated with Roadmap ID 554935.

When this will happen

General Availability (Worldwide): Rollout will begin early April 2026 and is expected to complete by early April 2026.

How this affects your organization

Who is affected:

  • Organizations using Microsoft Purview Data Catalog.
  • Admins and users who manage or consume resource sets, including Data Stewards and Data Consumers.
  • Only users with the Data Curator role in the default domain can enable or disable this feature.

What will happen:

  • Advanced resource sets become available as an optional, billable capability (billed per vCore hour).
  • Data Stewards can define custom pattern rules, use deletion detection, track schema drift, and view aggregated data for partitioned datasets.
  • Data Consumers will see aggregated data views, latest schema details, and improved lineage visualization.
  • Default grouping rules remain active even if Advanced resource sets are not enabled.
  • The feature is off by default and requires opt-in.

What you can do to prepare

Evaluate the following:

  • Does the schema of resource sets change regularly?
  • Do you need aggregation details for resource sets?
  • Do you need deletion detection when files are removed at the source?

If you answered Yes to any of these, consider enabling Advanced resource sets and budget for additional vCore hour charges.

If you answered No, disable this capability before April 1, 2026, to avoid costs.

To enable or disable:

  1. Sign in with a Data Curator role in the default domain.
  2. Open Account settings in Microsoft Purview.
  3. Use the toggle to enable or disable Advanced resource sets.
