Stop Settling for Boring Browsers: Vivaldi 7.7 for Android Brings Pro Features You Need
Following the release of Vivaldi 7.7 for desktop earlier this week, the power-user experience has officially arrived on mobile. Vivaldi 7.7 for Android bridges the gap between desktop and mobile, delivering highly requested features that put you in complete control of your browsing data and aesthetics.
From adding specialized search engines to managing your bookmarks locally, this update is all about choice.
Custom Search Engines: Your Web, Your Way
In October, Vivaldi introduced custom search engines to iOS. Now, Android users can enjoy the same level of customization. This isn’t just about switching between Google and Bing—it’s about accessing the specific tools you use daily, directly from your address bar.
Whether it’s a private search engine, a developer documentation site, or your favorite shopping platform, you can now add it as a native search option.
How to Add a Custom Search Engine on Android
- Open Settings and tap on Search Engine.
- Scroll to the Custom Search Engines section at the bottom.
- Tap Add custom search engine.
- Fill in the details:
- Name: (e.g., Brave Search)
- Nickname: A short keyword for quick access (e.g., br).
- URL: The search query URL (e.g., https://search.brave.com/search?q=%s).
- Suggest URL (Optional): Enables search suggestions in the address bar.
- Optional: Toggle the option to set it as your Default Search Engine.
Pro Tip: Once set up, you can switch engines instantly while typing by tapping the search icon in the address bar or using your nickname.
Pre-installed Search Engines
Vivaldi comes ready with trusted privacy-focused and major engines, including:
- Bing
- Yahoo
- DuckDuckGo
- Ecosia
- Startpage
- Wikipedia
Seamless Bookmark Management
Your data should never be trapped in a browser. Vivaldi 7.7 empowers you to move your bookmarks freely without needing a sync account.
- Import: Easily bring in bookmarks from other browsers via HTML files.
- Export: Create a backup of your Vivaldi bookmarks to keep safe or move to another device.
To access this feature
Tap the Vivaldi Menu (V icon) > Bookmarks > Three-dot menu > Select Import or Export.
“Dark Website” Mode: Intelligent Eye Comfort
Dark mode is back, and it’s smarter than before. While Vivaldi has long supported dark themes, the new “Dark Website” toggle offers a more refined experience.
Instead of a blanket setting that forces dark mode everywhere (which can sometimes break website layouts), this new toggle works on a per-site basis.
- How it works: When you visit a site that is too bright, open the Vivaldi Menu and tap “Dark Website”.
- Why it’s better: Vivaldi remembers your preference. If you enable it for a specific news site but leave it off for a shopping site, the browser respects those choices next time you visit. It’s not just a visual filter; it’s a personalized setting for that specific domain.
Note: If you prefer the “nuclear option,” you can still force dark mode on all websites globally by navigating to Settings > Appearance > Theme.
Download and Availability
The Vivaldi 7.7 update is available now on the Google Play Store.
For iOS Users: The corresponding update for iOS also rolled out recently, featuring enhanced dark mode stability and critical compatibility fixes for the latest iOS versions, ensuring a crash-free experience on new iPhones.
