Is the Terrible GFI LanGuard 12.13 Bug Stopping Your Patch Scans?

Why Is My GFI LanGuard Dashboard Wrong and How Do I Finally Fix It?

An IT administrator has reported a major problem with the GFI LanGuard 12.13 server. This bug is critical. It stops the software from doing its main job. After updating to this version, client computers can no longer check if they have the latest security patches. This issue requires a manual fix to work correctly again. If you use GFI LanGuard, you should know about this before you upgrade.

What the Bug Does

The core of the problem is with the patch database on client machines. After the update, this database is either old or completely missing. GFI LanGuard uses this database to see which security updates a computer needs. Without a working database, the software cannot tell if a computer is safe or vulnerable. You could have unprotected devices on your network and not even know it. The tool is effectively broken for patch detection.

How to Spot the Problem

Finding this bug is not easy. The main GFI LanGuard dashboard will look normal. It shows no warnings or errors, giving a false sense of security. The only sign of trouble is an error message hidden within the activity monitor.

You may have this problem if you see these signs:

  • The GFI LanGuard dashboard reports everything is okay.
  • Client computers are not showing their correct patch status.
  • An error about the patch database appears only in the activity monitor log.
  • This issue happens on multiple or freshly installed systems running version 12.13.

A Manual Fix is Required

The administrator who found this issue created a solution. You must use a batch file to fix the connection between the server and the clients. This batch file sends the license number directly to each client computer. Once a client gets the license number, its LanGuard agent will download or update the patch database during the next scan. After this fix, the agent can once again detect the correct patch level. Patching should then work as expected.

A History of Difficult Updates

The administrator noted that this is not the first time GFI LanGuard updates have caused problems. Past updates have also required significant time to fix. For example, previous versions had issues where Wake on LAN settings failed or server updates would only install on English-language systems. This latest bug in version 12.13 is another serious issue for system administrators to handle.
