Could the essential Firefox 144.0.2 security fix finally protect your browser from threats?
Mozilla has released a new version of its Firefox browser, numbered 144.0.2. This update is important because it fixes a serious security hole and several bugs that caused crashes or other problems.
Your browser will likely update on its own in the next few hours or days. If you want the update immediately, you can go to the Firefox menu, select “Help,” and then click “About Firefox” to start the download.
Desktop users on version 144.0 will jump directly to 144.0.2. An in-between version, 144.0.1, was only for Android devices.
What the Update Fixes
The new version corrects one major security problem and a list of other bugs to make your browsing experience smoother and safer.
Security Fix
The update patches a single, high-rated security flaw. This flaw, which appeared in Firefox 142, could have allowed a threat actor to bypass the browser’s built-in safety measures. Applying this update closes that security gap.
Performance and Bug Fixes
The update also resolves several performance issues on both Windows and macOS computers.
- For Windows Users: It fixes a crash that could happen if you had certain security software, like Avast, installed on your computer.
- For macOS Users: This update addresses multiple problems. It stops the browser from hanging when bookmark folders had repeating references. It also improves performance and video playback, especially when your system is under a heavy load. Other fixes solve issues with the emoji shortcut not working correctly and prevent errors when dragging images from Firefox to other applications.
Other general fixes include:
- Correcting an issue where the search engine dropdown menu did not appear consistently when using the keyboard.
- Resolving a loading problem on the “For You” section of Microsoft’s OneDrive Photos website.
- Fixing a display issue on the browser’s internal settings page.
The next major update, Firefox 145, is planned for release on November 11.
