How Will the 2026 Microsoft Edge Update Affect Your Saved Passwords?

Are You Ready for Microsoft Edge’s Primary Password Removal in 2026?

Microsoft is officially retiring the custom primary password feature in the Edge browser. Starting with Edge version 146, scheduled for release on March 12, 2026, the browser will no longer allow the creation of new custom primary passwords within its settings.

This upcoming change reflects Microsoft’s push to prioritize Windows Hello device authentication for securing stored credentials.

For users who already have a custom primary password configured, the system will display a warning notifying them of the impending discontinuation. You can continue using your existing primary password until June 4, 2026.

After this cutoff date, the browser will automatically migrate all remaining custom primary password users to standard device authentication methods.

This means you will need to rely on your device’s login credentials, such as a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint scan, to access and autofill your saved passwords in Microsoft Edge.
