How Can I Turn Off the New Blue Copilot Colors in Microsoft Edge but Keep the AI?

Why Did My Microsoft Edge Change Color and How Do I Get the Old Look Back?

You may have opened your Microsoft Edge browser recently and noticed something different. The top part of the browser, where your tabs and the address bar are, might have a new, soft blue color. This change is not a mistake. It is a new look that Microsoft has added to tell you when a special helper, called Copilot, is active.

This article is here to help you. It will explain what this new color means and show you how you can choose to either keep it or go back to the classic look you are used to. You have complete control over how your browser appears, and changing it is simple.

What Is This New Color and Why Is It There?

The new colorful look in Microsoft Edge is called the Copilot theme. Think of it as a signal. Its main job is to let you know that the Copilot feature is turned on and ready to help.

Copilot is an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant built into the browser. It’s designed to be your smart helper, ready to assist you with tasks like summarizing long articles, comparing products across different tabs, or even helping you write an email. When you see the special color on the browser frame, it’s a clear visual cue that Copilot is aware of the webpage you are on and can offer assistance based on what it sees.

Microsoft added this theme for a few important reasons:

  • Awareness: The color instantly tells you that an AI feature is active. It removes any guesswork about whether the AI is running in the background.
  • Trust: Knowing when Copilot is active helps build trust. You are always aware of when the AI can see your browser content, giving you more control over your privacy.
  • Clarity: Just like the dark look of an InPrivate window signals private browsing, the Copilot theme signals an AI-assisted session.

This theme turns on by itself when you enable a feature called “Copilot Mode”. But if you prefer the old look, you have options.

Option 1: Turn Off the Color by Disabling Copilot Mode

The fastest way to remove the new color theme is to turn off Copilot Mode altogether. This will return your browser to its classic appearance. However, doing this will also disable the advanced AI helper features that come with the mode. If you don’t plan on using the AI helper, this is a straightforward solution.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Open your Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Click on the three dots in the top-right corner of the window to open the main menu.
  3. From the menu, select Settings.
  4. On the Settings page, look at the panel on the left side. Click on the section named AI Innovations or Copilot mode.
  5. You will see a switch next to Copilot Mode. Click this switch to turn it off.

Once you turn it off, the color theme will disappear immediately, and your browser will look the way it did before. The AI features specific to this mode will also be deactivated.

Option 2: Keep the AI Helper but Disable the New Color

What if you like having the Copilot helper available but are not a fan of the new color theme? You are in luck. Microsoft understood that some people would want this choice, so they included a separate setting just for the theme. This lets you enjoy all the benefits of the AI assistant without changing your browser’s look.

Follow these simple steps to turn off only the theme:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and click the three-dots menu in the top-right corner. Choose Settings from the list. You can also get there directly by typing edge://settings/ into your address bar and pressing Enter.
  2. In the left-hand menu of the Settings screen, click on the AI Innovations tab.
  3. Inside this section, find and click on the option that says Copilot Mode Preferences.
  4. Here, you will find a dedicated switch labeled Copilot Theme. Click this switch to set it to the “Off” position.

The change happens right away. The blue Copilot theme will vanish, and your browser’s frame will return to its standard appearance. Meanwhile, Copilot Mode will remain active, so you can still use the AI helper whenever you need it. This option truly gives you the best of both worlds, allowing you to customize the experience to fit your preference perfectly.
