Microsoft has introduced passkey support for consumer accounts, enabling users to sign in using biometrics or device PINs across Windows, Google, and Apple platforms. This advancement offers a more secure alternative to traditional passwords.
Passkeys differ from passwords in their structure and function. While a password is a single, potentially vulnerable secret code, passkeys utilize a pair of unique cryptographic keys. One key is securely stored on the user’s device, protected by biometrics or a PIN, while the other key remains with the associated app or website. Both keys are required for successful authentication.
To create a passkey for your Microsoft account:
- Visit the designated link on your preferred device.
- Select the desired authentication method: face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key.
To Sign-in Microsoft account using passkey:
- When signing in to your account, choose the “Sign-in options“.
- Select face, fingerprint, PIN, or security key option.
- Your device will prompt a security window, allowing you to authenticate using your passkey and gain access to your account.
By adopting passkeys, Microsoft aims to provide users with a more convenient and secure login experience, reducing the reliance on traditional passwords and enhancing overall account protection.
