How to fix ‘Validation Overdue’ and ‘Unable to connect to FortiGuard servers’ messages in FortiGate Virtual Machine?

This article describes that after deploying the FortiGate Virtual Machine when checking at Dashboard > Status, it shows ‘Validation Overdue’ at Virtual Machine and ‘Unable to connect to FortiGuard servers.’ at Licenses. The other licenses show up with a green tick.

Scope

FortiGate v6.4.x.

Solution

Make sure that it does not have a connection issue from to Internet and that it does not have a DNS issue at the FortiGate.

Go to System > FortiGuard > FortiGuard Distribution Network > FortiGuard Updates and update server location.

If the FortiGate is outside the US and the setting is ‘US only’, change ‘Update server location’ from ‘US only’ to be ‘Lowest latency locations’ and select ‘Apply’.

If the FortiGate is outside the US and the setting is 'US only', change 'Update server location' from 'US only' to be 'Lowest latency locations' and select 'Apply'.

Wait and go to check at Dashboard again. The ‘Validation Overdue’ message and ‘Unable to connect to FortiGuard servers.’ message will disappear after that.
