The Nvidia App just got a new update, jumping from version 10.0.x to 11.0.1. It claims to fix the gaming performance issues users have been complaining about. But instead of addressing the root cause, Nvidia seems to have taken a shortcut by turning off Game Filters by default.
Previous versions of the Nvidia app caused a drop in gaming performance—up to 15% in some cases. Instead of solving the problem, Nvidia flipped a switch. Game Filters, which were part of the issue, are now off by default. If you’re someone who uses Game Filters for better visuals or screenshots, this change might feel like losing a feature you paid for.
Should You Update to 11.0.1?
If you’re already using version 10.0.x and manually turned off Game Filters to fix your frame rate issues, this update won’t add much value for you. In fact:
- It’s a 147MB download—small for some, but why waste data if nothing truly changes?
- Skipping it might even make you feel better about your carbon footprint.
How to Fix Performance Without Updating Nvidia App?
If you’re still on an older version and experiencing performance drops, here’s what you can do:
- Open the Nvidia App.
- Go to Settings > Features > Overlay > Game Filters and Photo Mode.
- Toggle Game Filters off.
That’s it! The new update does this automatically, but if you’ve already done it, there’s no need to bother with 11.0.1.
The Nvidia App recently came out of beta and replaced GeForce Experience in driver version 566.14. The beta testing didn’t catch these performance issues. Nvidia has released much smaller updates in the past with more significant improvements and optimizations, yet this one gets a big version jump to 11.0.x. Could there be hidden changes they haven’t disclosed? Or was this just a holiday-season rush job?
If you rely on Game Filters for your gaming experience, this update might feel like a step backward. If not, and you’ve already toggled them off manually, there’s little reason to download it unless Nvidia surprises us with unannounced improvements.
