How does the new Microsoft Edge 146 update change Workspaces and tab management?

Why is Microsoft Edge discontinuing Collections and primary passwords in update 146?

Edge Update 146 Overview

Microsoft released Edge version 146.0.3856.59 to the Stable Channel on March 13, 2026. This release resolves a Windows memory bug causing unexpected tab closures on devices with high RAM capacities. The patch stabilizes browser performance while modifying several core user features to improve overall security and data synchronization.

Discontinuation of Collections

Microsoft is permanently removing the Collections feature from the browser. You will now see a notification banner regarding this deprecation. The browser currently restricts you from adding new items to any existing collection. You must export your saved content or transfer all collected pages directly into your Favorites to prevent data loss.

Transition to Device Authentication

The deprecation process for custom primary passwords is now active. You can no longer create new custom primary passwords within the browser settings. Existing users will receive warnings about the upcoming removal date. On June 4, 2026, the browser will automatically transition all remaining custom password users to standard device authentication.

Workspaces V2 Architecture Migration

Edge Workspaces are migrating to a more efficient V2 architecture. Workspaces allow you to create, save, and share persistent tab groups across devices. Microsoft is currently transferring all saved Workspace data from OneDrive and SharePoint directly into the native Edge Sync service. This transition streamlines data management and improves synchronization reliability.
