Opera One R3 integrates native translation capabilities directly into the browser interface. When you visit a webpage written in a foreign language, the system detects this and prompts you to translate the content into your default language. While useful for international research, frequent popups distract some users. You can configure this behavior through the Settings menu or activate an experimental interface for a modernized experience.
Configuring Automatic Translation
You maintain full control over the built-in translation tool. If the feature is missing or intrusive, adjust the toggle switch in the browser settings.
Steps to Enable or Disable:
- Access Settings: Click the Opera Menu button (top-left) and select Settings, or press Alt + P.
- Navigate to Browser Options: Select the Browser tab in the left sidebar.
- Locate Translation Controls: Scroll down the right pane past the “Spell check” section until you find Opera Translate.
- Toggle the Feature:
- Disable: Switch the toggle next to “Use Opera Translate” to OFF. The browser will cease prompting you on foreign-language sites.
- Enable: Switch the toggle to ON to restore automatic detection and translation prompts.
Managing Language Exceptions
For a balanced approach, keep the feature active but restrict specific languages. Use the “Never offer to translate these languages” option within the same section. This prevents the popup from appearing for languages you are fluent in, while retaining utility for others.
Activating the Experimental Translate UI
Opera developers test interface improvements through hidden “flags.” A redesigned translation popup exists within the current stable build but requires manual activation. This modernized UI offers better aesthetics and usability compared to the default version.
Steps to Enable the Improved Popup
- Open Experiments Page: Type opera://flags in the address bar and press Enter.
- Search for the Feature: In the search bar, type translate.
- Locate the Flag: Find the entry labeled Improved Translate Popup (Flag ID: #opera-translate-improvements).
- Change Status: Click the dropdown menu next to the option and select Enabled.
- Apply Changes: Click the Relaunch now button appearing at the bottom of the screen.
Upon restarting, the browser renders the new translation interface. To revert these changes, repeat the steps above and set the flag status back to Disabled or Default.
