If you recently updated to a newer version of Opera (specifically Opera One or version 100+), you likely noticed a new AI chat button in your toolbar or sidebar. This feature, often labeled as “Aria” or “Opera AI,” connects you to Opera’s built-in artificial intelligence tools. While some users find this integration helpful, others view it as unnecessary clutter or “bloatware” that distracts from browsing. You can disable this feature quickly through the browser settings or remove it more aggressively using experimental flags.
Standard Deactivation via Settings
The safest and most reliable method to remove the AI chat button involves using Opera’s native configuration menu. This method ensures that your browser remains stable while effectively hiding the AI elements you do not wish to see.
- Open Settings: Launch Opera and click the Settings icon (gear symbol) in the sidebar, or simply press Alt+P on your keyboard to open the full preferences menu.
- Navigate to Features: In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings page, click on Features (sometimes listed under “Advanced” depending on your version).
- Locate AI Services: Scroll down the main pane until you find the AI Services or Aria Browser AI section.
- Toggle Off: Switch the toggle next to AI button in the toolbar or Aria to the OFF position. This action immediately hides the button from your interface.
Alternatively, you can use the Easy Setup menu (the sliders icon usually found in the top-right corner near the address bar). Scroll down to the AI Services section in this fly-out menu and toggle off Aria or AI Chat there for an even faster solution.
Advanced Removal via Experimental Flags
If the standard settings do not fully remove the feature, or if you want to disable the underlying functionality completely, you can modify Opera’s experimental flags. This method is more technical and targets hidden configuration options.
- Access Flags Menu: Type opera://flags into your address bar and press Enter. This command opens the “Experiments” page where you can adjust deep system settings.
- Search for AI Flags: In the search bar at the top of the page, type terms like “Opera AI,” “Aria,” or “AI Prompts“.
- Disable Specific Options: Look for flags such as #ai-chat-in-side-panel, #aria-extension, or #ai-prompts. Change the dropdown menu next to these options from Default or Enabled to Disabled.
- Relaunch Opera: Click the Relaunch button that appears at the bottom of the screen to apply your changes.
By following these steps, you regain control over your browser’s interface and eliminate unwanted distractions. Choose the standard method for a quick fix or the flags method if you prefer a cleaner, deeper removal of the AI integration.
