How Can You Fix YouTube’s Frustrating Playback Speed Problem?

Why Is YouTube Speed Control Broken on Your Android Phone?

If you watch YouTube videos on your Android phone, you might be having trouble this week. Many people can’t change how fast or slow their videos play. This problem is making lots of users upset.

What’s Going Wrong?

The YouTube app on Android phones has a big bug. When you try to make videos play faster or slower, it doesn’t work. You can tap the settings and pick different speeds, but they don’t stick. The video goes back to normal speed right away.

This problem affects both the regular YouTube app and the test version. It doesn’t matter if you pay for YouTube Premium or use the free version – everyone has the same issue. The strange thing is that YouTube’s website still works fine, and so does YouTube Music.

How YouTube Responded

YouTube noticed the problem and said they’re working on it. A company worker wrote: “We’re aware some of you are experiencing issues adjusting playback speed while watching videos on Android devices. Our teams are actively investigating this issue!”

Good news: YouTube fixed this problem on August 6, 2025. They told users to close the YouTube app completely and open it again.

What You Can Try

If your YouTube speed controls still don’t work, here are some things to try:

  1. Close and restart the app – YouTube says this should fix it now
  2. Press and hold the video – This makes it play at 2x speed, but only while you hold it
  3. Use YouTube in your web browser – The website version works fine
  4. Restart your phone – Some people say this helps for a little while

Why This Matters

Speed controls are really important for YouTube users. People use them to:

  • Watch tutorials faster when they already know some parts
  • Slow down complex videos to understand better
  • Speed through long videos when they’re in a hurry
  • Make boring content more interesting

When these controls break, it makes watching YouTube much harder and more annoying.

YouTube’s Track Record

This isn’t the first time YouTube has had problems like this. The app has had several issues lately:

  • Videos getting stuck at very low quality
  • The bottom menu disappearing completely
  • Speed controls breaking before (this happened last year too)
  • Videos playing at weird speeds like 0.03x

What to Do Now

Since YouTube says they fixed the problem, try these steps:

  1. Force close the YouTube app from your phone’s app settings
  2. Open the app again and test the speed controls
  3. Update the app if you haven’t already
  4. Use the website if problems continue

The speed control bug shows how much we depend on these features. When they break, it reminds us how important simple things like playback speed really are for our daily video watching.

Most Android users should be able to use speed controls normally now. If you still have problems, YouTube wants to know about it so they can keep fixing things.
