How to Fix Discord Direct Message DM Notification Won’t Go Away Glitch

Experiencing a glitch where Discord DM notifications persist as unread can be frustrating. This issue often arises even after all messages have been read and marked as such. Fortunately, there are effective strategies to resolve this problem.

Fix 1: Resolve Unread Discord DM Alerts

Occasionally, Discord may incorrectly display direct messages as unread. This can be rectified by manually marking messages as read within the application. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Discord, either through the desktop application or the web client.
  2. Navigate to the Direct Messages section, identifiable by an envelope icon.
  3. Scan for any conversations highlighted by an alert symbol.
  4. Right-click on the conversation and choose ‘Mark as Read’ option from the context menu.
  5. Apply this action to any other conversations erroneously marked as unread.

Right-click on the conversation and choose ‘Mark as Read’ option from the context menu.

Fix 2: Refresh Discord Session

If the issue persists, signing out of Discord may be necessary. This refreshes your session and prompts a status update from Discord’s servers, potentially clearing any lingering notifications.

To sign out and refresh your session:

  1. Access Discord and click on the user settings, located at the bottom-left corner.
  2. Scroll down within the Settings and select ‘Log out’.
  3. Confirm the action when prompted.
  4. Re-enter your login credentials to sign back into Discord.

Fix 3: Close Discord DM

Contrary to what one might think, ‘deleting’ a Discord DM is more akin to closing the conversation. This action removes the notification without erasing the message history.

To close a Discord DM:

  1. Launch Discord on your device.
  2. Click the Direct Messages icon, located at the top of the server list.
  3. Right-click the persistent message and select ‘Close DM’.

This will remove the message from your list, but you can always resume the conversation later, which will bring back the entire message history.

Fix 4: Mute Discord DM

If you prefer not to close a DM but still want to stop notifications, muting is an effective alternative. Muting a conversation will suppress all alerts, rendering the message grey in your list.

To mute a Discord DM:

  1. Open Discord and go to Direct Messages.
  2. Find the message you wish to mute and right-click it.
  3. Choose ‘Mute @user’ and select the duration, or opt for ‘Until I turn it back on’ for an indefinite mute.

Choose ‘Mute @user’ and select the duration, or opt for ‘Until I turn it back on’ for an indefinite mute.

This will silence notifications for the selected conversation.

Fix 5: Address Nitro Notification Glitch

A common culprit for stubborn DM notifications is an unnoticed Nitro promotion. To clear this alert:

  1. Navigate to the ‘Nitro’ tab in your DMs, below the ‘Friends’ tab.
  2. Click on it to view any ongoing promotions.

Viewing the Nitro promo, even if you choose not to subscribe, should remove the notification. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, update Discord or clear its cache to refresh the application.

These steps should effectively eliminate the glitch, restoring clarity to your Discord experience. If the problem continues, consider reaching out to Discord support for further assistance. Remember, a smooth and uninterrupted user experience is paramount, and these solutions aim to maintain that standard.
