Duolingo. Babbel. YouTube channels. Rosetta Stone (yes, it’s still around).
That’s great if you like options.
It’s less great if you spend more time researching language-learning tools than actually learning the language.
The reality is that everyone learns differently. Some people want conversation practice. Others prefer workbooks. Some want fluency. Others just want to survive a vacation without pointing at menu items and hoping for the best.
Instead of trying to fit yourself into someone else’s system, AI can help you build one that’s designed around your goals, interests, and learning style.
Start with your goal

Instead, start with the outcome.
Prompt: I want to learn Italian well enough to travel comfortably in Italy next summer. I can dedicate 20 minutes a day. Ask me questions about how I learn best, then recommend the ideal combination of apps, books, videos, exercises, and practice.
Someone learning Italian for business will need a very different plan than someone looking for the best pizza in Rome.

Build your curriculum
Before creating something from scratch, see what’s already out there.
AI can compare apps, recommend resources, and organize everything into a personalized learning plan.
Prompt: Create a 12-week learning plan for conversational Spanish. Include apps, books, podcasts, YouTube channels, speaking practice, writing exercises, weekly goals, and common mistakes to avoid.
Instead of bouncing between random resources, you’ll have a roadmap.
Turn AI into a tutor
If you don’t have access to a tutor, AI can step in surprisingly well.
Prompt: Act as a patient French tutor. Speak mostly in French, but explain difficult concepts in English when needed. Correct my mistakes briefly and continue the conversation naturally.
Using voice mode, you can practice ordering food, checking into hotels, meeting new people, interviewing for jobs, or navigating everyday situations.
You can even choose how often you want corrections and whether they happen during or after the conversation.
Build your own workbook, game, or app
Not everyone learns through conversation.
Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can create custom workbooks, quizzes, flashcards, study guides, and even simple language-learning apps tailored to your goals.
You can ask AI to build a travel workbook, create vocabulary exercises around your hobbies, or turn learning into a text-based adventure where you navigate a new city using your target language.
The best language-learning system isn’t the most comprehensive.
