Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge lack built-in options for customizing keyboard shortcuts. However, you can achieve this by adding extensions to these browsers. AutoControl is a comprehensive add-on compatible with Chrome and Edge, allowing you to set up custom hotkeys for various browser actions.
To get started, click the “Get” or “Add to Chrome” buttons on the AutoControl pages linked below. Keep in mind that this extension requires a Native Component installation, so press the “Install Native Component” button when prompted. Note that AutoControl has specific system requirements for Windows.
After installation, access the Extensions menu and select the AutoControl add-on. This will open an AutoControl tab where you can configure your custom hotkeys. Click the left Trigger box, input a desired hotkey (e.g., Ctrl + X), and then choose an action from the “Choose an action” box.
Test your new custom keyboard shortcut by activating the assigned action with the designated hotkey.
AutoControl provides Basic Actions and Advanced Actions tabs. The Basic Actions tab covers standard browsing and tab options, already having default hotkeys in Chrome and Edge. In the Advanced Tab, you can assign hotkeys for window, tab, bookmark, menu, and system actions. For details about each action, click the question marks next to them.
As an example, you can create shortcuts for opening bookmarked websites. Press the “Choose an action” button, select “Advanced Actions > Bookmark Actions,” and then click “Open bookmarks.” Choose a webpage from the available options.
Modify your hotkey easily by using the Action menu. Select a different option, press the trigger buttons, and double-click “Delete Element” to change the hotkey. Assign a name by clicking the top of the hotkey’s box.
