How Can You Fix God of War Ragnarok Something Went Wrong Error Keep Popping Up?

The issue usually hits when the game boots up, causing crashes or even black screens. The root of the error? Not clear. But no worries! After digging through Steam, Reddit, and YouTube, here are three ways that might help you out.

Solution 1: Verify the Integrity of Game Files

Many players swear by this method. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open Steam and go to your Library.
  2. Find GoWR.exe, right-click on it and select Properties.
  3. Click on the Installed Files from the left panel, then select “Verify integrity of game files.” Wait for the process to finish.
  4. Restart the game and see if it works.

Solution 2: Adjust Virtual Memory Size

If your virtual memory is low, it could trigger this error. Here’s a quick fix:

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run box, type sysdm.cpl, and hit Enter.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab and click on Settings in the Performance section.
  3. Under the Advanced tab, click Change in the Virtual memory section.
  4. Uncheck the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” box. Select your main drive (usually C drive), choose Custom size, and increase the Initial and Maximum sizes.
  5. Click Set, then OK.

Solution 3: Unpacking GoWR.exe

Step 1: Add GoWR.exe to Steam

  1. Make sure your game is installed correctly. Just a heads up: don’t put it on the C drive.
  2. Launch Steam and search for GoWR.exe and GoWR.rne. If you can’t find GoWR.rne, grab a clean version from a trustworthy site.
  3. Click on the Settings icon and select Properties.
  4. In Compatibility, switch to Proton Experimental.
  5. Hit Play and brace yourself for the error. Don’t sweat it; just click “Don’t Report.”

Step 2: Get the Tools

Download Steamless and the Goldberg Emulator Fork from GitHub.

Step 3: Install Lutris

Open the Discover store and search for Lutris. Click Install.

Step 4: Unpack GoWR.exe with Steamless

  1. Head to your Downloads folder and unzip the Steamless files.
  2. Find the GoWR.rne file in your game folder and copy it to the Steamless folder. Rename it to GoWR.exe.
  3. Open Lutris, click on “Add Game,” and choose “Add locally installed game.”
  4. Under Game info, type “steamless” and select Wine from the Runner menu.
  5. In Game options, point it to Steamless.exe in your Downloads.
  6. Create a new folder in your Documents called “God of War Ragnarok” inside a “Prefix” folder.
  7. In Lutris, select the new GoWR folder you made in the Wine prefix section.
  8. Set the Wine version to Proton Experimental and click Save.
  9. Click the grey Steamless box, then select “Run EXE inside Wine prefix.” Choose Steamless.exe and wait for the window to pop up.
  10. In Steamless, select the GoWR.exe you renamed and hit “Unpack File.” Once done, check for a new file named GoWR.exe.unpacked.exe.
  11. Go back to your Games folder, rename the original GoWR.exe to GoWR.exe-bak (just in case).
  12. Copy the unpacked file into the Games folder and rename it to GoWR.exe.
  13. Extract the steam_api64.dll and configs.main.EXAMPLE.ini from the emu-win-release zip file.
  14. Paste steam_api64.dll into your Games folder and overwrite when prompted.
  15. Launch the game from Steam. You might see an “SDK Runtime is missing” error. Ignore it for now.

Step 5: Bypass the SDK Runtime Requirement

  1. Go to your Home directory and navigate to steam > steamapps > compatdata. Find the folder that corresponds to GoWR.
  2. Inside, locate pfx > drive_c > users > steamuser > AppData > Roaming > GSE Saves > Settings > configs.main.
  3. Copy the configs.main.EXAMPLE.ini file into this folder, delete the old configs.main.ini, and rename the new one.
  4. Open configs.main.ini, change steam_deck=0 to 1, and save it.

After all this, give the game a shot. Fingers crossed, that error will be a thing of the past!
