Maybe this is the right time to talk about social anxiety as we are experiencing it more than ever since the corona epidemic started and changed our lives. We are isolated, in a state of a lockdown that requires social distance or limited communication of any kind. Social media is flourishing as a result, as applications like Zoom or Instagram are our only link with the outside world. If this state continues for a little longer, we might get used to this kind of communication, without face-to-face human interaction. Technology was supposed to bring us together or connect us in many different ways but it seems like we are drifting apart from each other and that gap between us is filled with anxiety.
Every major tech brand in the last few decades was emphasizing the importance of technology in our lives and how it will make us more connected. It was supposed to facilitate communication between people, especially young students or family members living far away from each other. Mobile phones just kept upgrading their abilities and this new generation of kids cannot even imagine our world without social media or new tech gadgets. It was all a nice idea that motivated us to embrace more technology in our lives, but it seems like that a couple of decades later we drifted away from each other. Conditions like anxiety or depression are more common amongst young people than ever as well as a feeling of detachment from our society.
It is really hard for modern humans to establish a meaningful relationship with others the old-fashioned way, by talking or commiserating. We rely too much on modern gadgets to do all this work for us as it seems we became a little lazy along the way and forgot how to connect with others. This can take some serious toll on our mental health as many studies already show, as alienating from others creates a lot of mistrust that only grows as time goes by. Living in such an atmosphere of fear or anxiety is not healthy especially if it continues for a prolonged amount of time. Alienation creates more mental and physical problems than just fear so we need to find new ways of reestablishing our lost connection with humans.
The Art Of Conversation
Generations before us grew up in what we call a conversation culture where people just talked to each other and actually enjoyed their conversation. We must wonder what happened to our lives so we forgot the art of a meaningful conversation. Reading some anxiety essay papers might shed some light on this topic, but it all comes down to that technology changed our lives in many ways. There are so many folks with anxiety because life has become faster, more stressful, and ruthless, as we are trapped in a web of rules, regulations, and obligations that keep piling up each day. We live our imaginary lives online because in our private lives we are so messed up and lonely as fast living doesn’t leave much room for connecting with others.
If one’s life comes down to work and sleep, there is not much to talk about so it is no wonder that people are alienating themselves from each other. People used to study the art of communication so they can express themselves in many different ways but it seems like being a smooth talker is a rare quality these days. Young students need to appreciate this skill more if they plan on having some meaningful relationship with others in their future. Being fearful of interacting with fellow humans is not a way to live your life, but communication is a two-way street and it needs both parties to participate.
One can argue that this world has become a cold place where each relationship comes down to bossing or curious talk without expressing one’s sincere feelings. Online dating is a reality and avoiding people out of fear of judgment or rejection is a fact. Perhaps it is inevitable or perhaps we need to step back from all this technology for a second and try embracing life for what it is, without social media, fancy gadgets, or mobile devices. We can discover the joy of hanging out with other people, getting to know them, and soaking up other’s ideas or opinions. This is how we create tolerance and start debates about any issue that we might disagree upon with others.
Avoiding people can be dangerous as we instinctively fear what we do not know, and not knowing people means being surrounded by strangers who you do not trust. Effective communication is the key to this problem, as spending some real-time with others helps you understand them and delivers you from any anxiety you might have. Each relationship is hard but one should not run away from it because talking, sharing, and understanding is the only way to grow as an individual. Technology is supposed to help us with that without making things more difficult. At least, that was the idea, but somewhere along the way, things went south and we need to make everything right again.
Next time you meet a stranger, try saying more than just a few curious words of greeting. Maybe you are standing next to a person that can change your life if you only put some effort into connecting with her. Give everybody a chance as you have nothing to lose. Communication can be fun and exploring different ways of connecting with others can be an adventure. Just put down your smartphone for a while, go out there, and say hi to other human beings.
