Introduction

Achieving mobile-first maturity requires a careful combination of planning and flexibility. We adhere to 5 Key Principles of Mobile-First Maturity to consistently deliver quality and value without sacrificing creativity and adaptivity. These principles guide us and our customers.

The Customer
One such customer has a flagship app which combines data from different credit bureaus, providing users with real-time updates to their credit score, history, and scenario simulations.

Just like a lot of apps, however, this one needed a facelift to keep up with changing user needs and demands.

Customer Challenges:

  • Updating the app’s architecture so that it could leverage new data effectively.
  • Expanding to include new user types and more control over the experience.
  • Updating to mobile hardware changes: screen size, haptics, and biometric security.

Also, the customer already had a mobile team and this wouldn’t be a short-term project. This meant they needed skilled resources added to their team, but only as the project required.

See our principles in action…

Guiding Principle #1: One Size Does Not Fit All

Customer challenge: We didn’t have the internal resources within our team to accomplish this task, both technically and strategically. We needed a team that could think outside the box and provide insightful solutions.

Solution: Even though we have over a decade of experience bringing great mobile app experiences to life for customers, we did not provide cookie-cutter solutions to our customers’ unique needs.

This specific app utilized an extreme amount of data in complex environments. It included a ton of reporting features as well. We understood the importance of accuracy and up-time for a financial app like this. We also augmented their existing team to provide experts in areas where they were most needed, not just generic mobile development talent.

Guiding Principle #2: Apps Are Only as Good as the Problems They Solve

Customer challenge: Our app needed refactoring to accommodate a new data set we wanted to leverage, but it wasn’t optimized for this. Rebuilding the app from scratch wasn’t an option, but neither was leaving it as-is.

Solution: The new data set would improve the app’s ability to solve a critical user problem, but it needed to do so in a way that felt seamless for new and established users alike. We opted for a hybrid approach that built a layer behind the UI that translated new data sets into actionable insights without disrupting the experience for established users.

Guiding Principle #3: User Experience Starts and Ends with Mobile Best Practices

Customer challenge: Our app was initially developed for an older mobile OS and different hardware. Years after the initial launch, both hardware and software had advanced considerably. This meant we needed new layouts, updated form factors, and revised sizing.

Solution: We knew that a different OS and a different screen size meant that while the overall look and feel needed to remain the same, the way it achieved this had to adapt. We took a deep-dive into the app’s design and structure to bring it in line with updated iOS and Android style guides.

This also included reformatting of graphs and other visual aids so they would be more readable and engaging on a mobile format.

Guiding Principle #4: Only Apps with a Strong Development Life Cycle Survive

Customer challenge: Dealing with real credit scores, credit history, and credit data posed a major challenge for testing: we didn’t have much good test data to work with.

Solution: In order to accurately gauge the app’s functionality, we created an integrated test system that could simulate the app’s various functions with mock data sets that mimicked real credit history. After the initial launch, we worked closely with the customer service team to identify unexpected issues that could further guide iterative improvements to the app’s code.

Throughout the project, we helped our client avoid “technical debt” by not taking shortcuts and by making decisions to avoid unnecessary future costs.

Guiding Principle #5: For Apps, Native Development Languages Rule the Roost

Customer challenge: Our app technology was old and couldn’t utilize features in the latest iOS versions. It need to be updated, but we still needed it to remain on-brand with our corporate identity.

Solution: We knew that simply creating a carbon copy of the company website wouldn’t deliver an exceptional mobile experience for users, so we worked closely with their team to adapt their brand’s visual style into a framework that made sense (and felt native) to a mobile environment.

We modernized the app’s codebase, moving from Objective C to Swift. This update to the app architecture enables it to stay current with the latest iOS and future versions.
