Setup Multiple Detail Sections on Microsoft Access Reports

Sometimes, when developing a report in Access, one might wish for more than one single Detail Section. Perhaps 22 inches is just not enough, perhaps conflicting settings should be applied to different areas of the section, perhaps a section break could serve as a conditional page break.

There is a simple trick to obtain as many Detail Sections as needed. Well, there is a limit — isn’t there always? — often user-defined sections on any report (and 200″ total height). There is also a prerequisite: the rows must have a unique identifier.

If there is an “identity” field, or a combination of fields that serve as unique key, then you can create a group on that field or fields. Since the key will change for every record, the “group” will contain only a single record, and thus both the group header and the group footer will behave just like the detail section.

For example, if you are designing a complex financial report for your customers, based on the Customers Table, having the field ID as key field, you simply create a group on that field:

* Open the report in design view,
* activate the “Sorting and Grouping” sheet,
* select the field ID as “Field/Expression”,
* (if you have more than one key field, select them one by one on succesive rows),
* set “Group Header: yes” (on the last field of multi-field keys),
* optionally set “Group Footer: yes” for a total of three Detail Sections.

Tip: If you need to sort the records (e.g. by customer name or by country), the sort order must be given at the very top, before the key fields used to create multiple detail sections. That is because in “Sorting and Grouping”, the “sorting” portion cannot be turned off. Naturally, the same is true for real grouping you might need also: they must be created “before”.

Back up files in Linux to avoid losing important data

Losing files and data, especially precious holiday photos and music downloads, can be a traumatic experience. Like other operating systems, Linux has tools that allow you to back up and restore files when the hard drive or some other component fails.

Simple Backup
This is a simple open source backup software that is easy to use and does its job well. To download and install the software, go to Synaptic Package Manager (System > Administration), search for sbackup and mark the software for installation. Then, click Apply to install the package.

Once installation is completed, launch Simple Backup Config, which can be found under System > Administration. You will then see a range of backup options available to you. In the General tab, choose the recommended settings if you wish to backup user files in the /home, /etc, /usr/local and /var directories on a periodic basic.

MouseFix.exe solved Optical Mouse Single Click Problem

Have you ever faced a problem with your optical mouse(any brand – specially the lesser expensive ones like: techcomm, frontech, zebronics etc) ? After usage of 7-8 months(the duration differs) many optical mouse users face a problem of multiple clicks(2 or more than 2) on clicking just once. It becomes really hard to control the mouse clicks while browsing. This is a very common problem and I have faced this problem on three different optical mouses till date.

Well, after searching for solutions on many sites I finally found a solution.

Mousefix.exe is a very small free application which you will need to put in your startup folder and which will always run in the background in case your mouse is having the problem i said. How to Keep Content Fresh and Interesting

One of the hardest things about blogging can arise when the blogger runs out of things to say. As words are what keep your blog going, if your mind goes blank, so will your blog page. While this is a common occurrence, it does not have to be a fatal one. There are some ways to dig yourself out of this problematic hole without losing your blog.

A great way to get fresh content is to invite guest bloggers to your blog. Invite one or as many guest bloggers as you need. Even though you may blog about the same things, everyone thinks differently and has different opinions whether the issues are the same or not. Don’t worry that you will lose your readers to the guest blog as loyal readers will always be interested in what you have to say!

Fix WordPress Internal Server Error

I was writing an article earlier today on Blogging Tips and I received the famous Internal Server Error. When this happens you can still access non WordPress pages on your site and see your favicon however the site is unusable and you cannot access any pages, including the WordPress admin area,

This is the kind of message you will see if you have an Internal Server Error :

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@yoursite.com.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Rotate Screen in Windows 7

The standard orientation of our computer screens is generally horizontal (also known as landscape) but monitors placed in portrait mode (where height becomes greater than the width) can be pretty useful for performing tasks that require lot of scrolling (like reading lengthy web pages).

Windows 7 includes a new option under Display Settings that can help you flip the screen from portrait to landscape mode (and vice-versa) without requiring additional software.

This may come very handy if you are using a dual monitor setup with Windows 7 where you want one screen in the default horizontal mode and other one in vertical mode for reading content.

Attract Readers with Subject Line

Today’s inbox is generally cluttered with many different offers and sales pitches and so it seems strange that more people who are trying to market their blogs through an email marketing campaign or another method don’t take the time to write a great subject line.

These are the times when it’s more necessary than ever to ensure that you’ve got a great subject line to help promote your blog but that essential part of any email seems to be treated with a blas© attitude.

Remember that the subject line is one of the more important parts of any email marketing campaign and it makes the first impression that you want to give to any prospective readers. As good as the newsletter about your blog might be, it could very well end up in the trash without an effective subject line. With that in mind there are several things that you’ll want to remember about these to ensure that you get to the point directly.

* And the first point is just that. You want to keep them short and sweet. The general rule is one of these subject lines should never have more than nine words. Remember that most of the browsers that are used today don’t have capabilities beyond that anyway.

* Make the benefit to opening the letter known right away. Give the reader some kind of instant reward for opening the message immediately. Using phrases that any reader will see as beneficial are good like save time or profit from home but only give away enough so that they will need to click on your message.

*Asking a question in the first line is a good way to entice the reader into wanting to go further. It’s a technique that makes the tone of the email more friendly.

Google Docs convert web addresses into Tiny URLs

The spreadsheet component of Google Docs provides some useful functions for importing web data into your online documents. For instance, you can use the importFeeds function to manipulate RSS in Google Docs while the importHTML function helps you fetch information from a live web page into Google Docs.

The following Google Spreadsheet demonstrates how one can use these import functions in Google Docs to convert web addresses into tiny URLs on the fly. You may have to create a copy of this spreadsheet into your own Google Account for entering new data or for modifying the cell formulas.

This spreadsheet, written by bit.ly developers, makes a call to the bit.ly API as soon as a URL is entered by the user and displays the API response in the short URL column. Internally, it uses the importData function which is normally used to display CSV data in Google Docs.

Creating a video slideshow from photos is easy. Import your image collection into Photo Story (or Windows Movie Maker), choose a music track to play alongside the slideshow and render. As Microsoft prepare to release their Windows Mobile 6.5 OS update, they are also putting the final touches on the Windows Marketplace App store which should release at the same time as the 6.5 update.

As reported from Intomobile, Microsoft hope that their Marketplace will be a direct competitor to Apple’s App store. We reckon it will be sometime before Microsoft manage to achieve the same levels of success as Apple.

Adobe Mobile Flash Plugin for iPhone

It’s been reported that a developer has submitted a Adobe Mobile Flash Plug-in for use on the iPhone. Fans hoping for the plug-in to stay though might be disappointed as it breaks all kinds of agreements and may not get a public release.

As reported from PCMag, developer Jonah Grant submitted the Flash plug-in on Friday April 24th. One of the main problems that lies with his Flash plug-in is that the Apple developer agreements forbids the use of separate download code.
