Happy birthday, Android

It is but a year-old and this creature is already expecting 50 children. We are talking about Android, Google’s operating system, first born in the HTC Dream G1 handset on Oct 22 last year.

The other offspring include Acer Liquid A1 and LG GW620 Eve (both expected next month) and Lenovo O1 Ophone and Dell Ophone mini3i – Benzine (release dates unspecified), said wiseandroid.com, which compiled the list.

Already, Android holds 7 percent of the market globally. Its users download 9.1 new applications for their handsets each month compared to 10.2 apps per month for its closets rival, iPhone, said AdMod, a big mobile advertising firm head quartered in San Mateo, California.

Conceptualised as a free, open-source platform OS, customers liked that Android makes smartphone tasks like Web browsing and networking easy.

Nearly all smartphone makers, including HTC, Motorola and Samsung, are busy coming up with Android-run cellphones. Given its fast growth, the Google OS could not only be force that powers smartphones, but it could even muscle out Windows Mobile.
